Grade 3s make mindmaps

mindmaps

The Grade 3s have been making mindmaps of things they like and things they don't like using a programme called Kidspiration. They also learned how to export the mindmaps as images and save them in their folders. Here is a group of Grade 3s displaying their mindmaps. Next time I want to try one of the web-based mindmap programmes.

'Fun with photos' sites

ulfah

There are several of these fun photo sites and I have been trying out different ones with different classes. This example is from Picjoke.com. After choosing their fun photos the class wrote a creative writing paragraph about their picture. Here is one written by Ulfah in Grade 5.
"There was once a girl who was a great artist and she lived with her mother. Her father died in 1986 when she was just five years old. One day she asked her mother what she should draw? Her mother told her that she could draw one of her friends. A few days later she asked her friend, Ulfah she could draw her. Ulfah of course said yes and the next day Ulfah came over. Cameron’s mother made some cookies and poured some milk. Cameron started to draw Ulfah but she didn’t have to look at Ulfah the whole time because she had a photo of her. When she was finished drawing she started to paint and that took hours! Finally she was done and they all ate up the cookies and milk up! The painting was beautiful, needless to say. Cameran gave it to Ulfah for a present".

Our Grade 2 weather project

In Grade 2 the children learn about the seasons and weather as part of their curriculum.
Our three Grade 2 classes were invited by a teacher in Switzerland to participate in a Grade 2 ‘Weather around the world’ project along with 11 other Grade 2 classes around the world. (2010) This involved us thinking about what questions we would like to know, taking photos to show our weather, discussing the reasons for different weather in different countries, and comparing findings. We used Skype to communicate with other classes. The final findings were put onto Voicethreads, and we are in the process of making another Voicethread summarising our own findings.

Essential question: How does weather affect people?

Audience: 12 Grade 2 classes in Switzerland, Alaska, Honolulu in Hawaii, Florida in the USA, Tanzania in Africa, New Jersey in the USA, Bangkok in Thailand, Madrid in Spain, Melbourne in Australia, Vancouver Island in Canada, Fish Hoek in South Africa.

Miss Southern reports that her class really enjoyed the experience of speaking on Skype to a class in Switzerland. Here is a slideshow of the photos that Maggie sent us from Switzerland showing the winter season.

This has been a wonderful project as we have swapped photographs as well, and we have a better understanding of weather around the world and how it affects people. All that remains to be uploaded is our own voicethread about weather. Watch this space!
