A week at the World Innovative Teacher Finals in Salvador Brazil
Mrs Beal was very fortunate to be able to attend the World Finals of the Microsoft Innovative Teachers’ Forum in Salvador Brazil from 2 – 9 November. This is a post about this amazing experience.

Monday 2nd November
On Monday 2nd November, an excited and expectant group of five South African teachers as well as teachers from nine other African countries, met at Johannesburg airport and set off for Salvador in Brazil on a huge SA Airways plane to participate in the Microsoft Innovative Teachers World Finals conference. Can you find Salvador on a map of Brazil?

Our group from Africa comprises 25 people – teachers from Africa. a reporter from the Sunday Independent, one of the judges for the event, principals, observers from Namibia, and several Microsoft employees from Africa. Here are three of us at the airport. Can you guess what we are carrying?

After a nine hour trip we changed flights at an enormous international airport in Sao Paula (in another part of Brazil) and caught a connecting flight to Salvador. We arrived at our hotel at midnight. We are staying at the Pestana Bahai which is a 23-story five-star hotel. The sea is very loud - should sleep well tonight. Tomorrow we have a meeting all morning with our Africa team, and then the conference opens at 5pm. Do you know what the time difference is between South Africa and Salvador, Brazil?
Tuesday 3rd November
It’s a hot Brazilian day! I must say that to wake up to the sound of the swirling, thundering waves is quite a treat. I have just been to a Brazilian breakfast on the 23rd floor. What breathtaking views!

Our collaborative stories are on Miss Ale's school website! Yippee!
Today I noticed that Miss Ale in Argentina has put all our two-nation and three-nation collaborative stories on her school website in Argentina. Wow! Thank you Miss Ale - you have done this beautifully. It was a great experience writing with Argentina and Canada. Here is the link:

The Microsoft Innovative Teacher competition - Pan African finals in Mauritius, September 2009
This was the second round of the Microsoft Innovative Teacher competition in 2009. The three South African winners joined up with the rest of Pan Africa's winners for a week in Mauritius. I am glad to report that in Mauritius I was awarded a winning place and will be representing South Africa and, in fact, AFRICA, at the World Finals in Brazil! Maybe this is all just a wonderful dream….

Grade 4&5B shows care to the community
Grade 4&5B donated some of their individual earnings from KTV Market Day to the Sunflower Fund, and handed over their money gift in the classroom today. The representatives from the fund explained about the work of the Sunflower Fund and handed out bandanas to the class in preparation for Bandana Day. “The Sunflower Fund aims to educate and recruit a viable source of well-informed potential bone marrow stem cell donors who are ethnically diverse, in an effort to save the lives of those needing a transplant when suffering from life-threatening blood disorders.” (Taken from their website)

Grade 4&5B wins Cape Town KTV Market Day award!
We are very proud of or Grade 4&5Bs. On Saturday 5 September twenty children from our school, mainly from Grade 4&5B entered the KTV (Kids TV) Market Day competition at one of the big malls in Cape Town. They had already submitted business plans to the organizers explaining what they planned to sell and how they had made their products, and were accepted to participate based on these business plans. The organizers were very impressed with their creative organization and selling skills. Cailom won R10,000 for her innovative product - Vuvuzelas from seaweed. She gets R6000 and the school gets R4000. Danvan and Gaiwhe won first prize for their product - Knick Knack Knockers and each received goodie bags from KTV. Geocro and her partner from another class won prizes in the talent show. Mrs B received a R5000 award for the best teacher since her students achieved so many prizes. Well done class! We have just heard that Cailom has won the national KTV award for her innovative product, and the school gets R25,000. KTV is coming to film the class and the school next week!
